An older school with a tight budget and a lot of fluorescent.
St. Matthew's runs a parish and a school on one campus. Most of its lighting was older fluorescent wraps and troffers, plus aging exterior fixtures, using about 95,000 kWh a year.
Like most parish schools, it had no capital budget for lighting. The upgrade had to pay for itself from the energy savings.
Every fixture replaced. The monthly savings cover the monthly payment.
Classrooms and halls
344 4-foot LED wraps, 37 back-lit 2x2 panels and troffer retrofit kits in classrooms, offices and corridors.
High-ceiling spaces
10 LED high bays replaced the old high-wattage fixtures in the tallest spaces.
Exterior and parking
LED shoebox, flood, wallpack and canopy fixtures for the parking lot, building walls and entries.
PG&E On-Bill Financing
The project was financed through PG&E On-Bill Financing. The estimated monthly savings (about $1,230) match the monthly loan payment, so the school paid nothing upfront.
Maintenance savings
LED lasts far longer than fluorescent, so staff spend much less time and money replacing lamps and ballasts.
Payback in about 8.5 years
After the loan is repaid, the savings stay with the school.
